Eco-Schools

The Eco-Schools Programme is an International Programme that aims to encourage actions and recognise the quality of the work developed by schools in the field of Environmental Education.

Escola Secundária Almeida Garrett (ESAG) is an eco-school that is extremely committed to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable practices.

This project is coordinated nationally by the Blue Flag Association (ABAE) and is aimed at all levels of education. Its methodology, inspired by the principles of the local Agenda 21, aims to ensure the participation of students in decision-making, involving them in the construction of a more sustainable school and community. The Programme involves a diverse set of initiatives in the form of projects, challenges and competitions. The support, training, monitoring and evaluation of the Eco-Schools Programme at ESAG are carried out by ABAE, with the support of the National Commission and the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The implementation of the steps of the methodology of the Eco-Schools Programme includes the creation of the Eco-Schools Council, the the Environmental Audit, the production of the Eco-Code, and the preparation and evaluation of the Action Plan.

The implementation of this Project at ESAG allows us to contemplate the objective of the Educational Project of ESAG: to promote ecological awareness based on the environmental education.

The School has been applying for and receiving the respective Eco-School Award since 2009/2010.

At ESAG there are points for collecting caps, ink cartridges, radiographs, batteries, household appliances, cork stoppers, lamps and various eco-points, and the entire school community is aware of this.
